A Glowing Smile In Less Than an Hour!

The process of zoom whitening involves a few important steps:

  • Consent and questions answered

  • Before photos

  • Moulds taken of your teeth to fabricate your whtening trays

  • Teeth whitening with your chosen method

  • After photos

The Zoom Whitening Treatment is a bleaching process used to lighten the discoloration of enamel and dentin.  It is done in-office and uses the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp which accelerates the bleaching process by activating 25% of hydrogen peroxide whitening.  As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen is able to enter the enamel and dentin and bleach the stained substances, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged.

The actual Zoom procedure takes less than an hour, but it's recommended to undergo a regular teeth cleaning prior to the actual Zoom teeth whitening session.  The Zoom treatment begins by covering the lips and gums, so only the teeth are exposed.  When this is completed, the dentist will apply the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works in conjunction with the Zoom light to penetrate the teeth and break up stains and discoloration.

While the light is activated, the gel remains in place for 15 minutes in which you are free to relax, listen to music or watch TV.  The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation, and completed after 45 minutes.  Immediately after the light procedure is finished, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel is applied to the teeth.

Before you leave, your dentist will give you a Zoom home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays.  At Pennington Dental, this home-kit is included in the price of the procedure.

To get a better understanding of the Zoom Whitening Treatment, read through our FAQs below.

How long does the treatment last?

You will need a 15-20 minute consulation before the day of your procedure for initial discussion, consent, photographs and an oral check-up.  Moulds are usually taken during this appointment as well, which ensures your whitening trays will be ready immediately after surgery.  The actual laser part of the whitening treatment takes around 60-90 minutes in the chair.  If you are interested in the Enlighten system, no laser light is used.  All of the whitening is accomplished using Enlightens own system of home and insurgery trays.

How long does the effect last?

The effect should last years. A homekit is included with the Zoom whitening and the Enlighten system treatment so you can maintain up your newly whitened teeth whenever you choose in the privacy of your own home.  You can purchase more whitening gel from our clinic or over the phone, we're happy to mail it out to you.

By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and occasional touch-ups with Zoom! Weekender or Nite White gel. These are professional formula products designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. They are available only through your dental professional.

Does whitening work on false teeth, veneers and crowns?

No, teeth whitening will only work on naural teeth.  Crowns, bridges, veneers and false teeth will not be whitened during this procedure.  For this reason, teeth whitening is performed before any other restorative work is undertaken.

Are over-the-counter kits as effective?

The over the counter products are only strong enough to deal with very minor surface stains, so they cannot not penetrate the structure of the tooth to whiten deeper down.

Can tooth whitening paste replace the treatment?

LIke over-the-counter kits, the active ingredient in these pastes is not strong enough to enter into the deeper tissues.  Also, the contact time on the teeth is very short

Are there any side effects?

Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. The Zoom! light generates minimal heat which is the usual source of discomfort for patients. On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experienced immediately after the procedure, but dissipate soon afterwards. You can also ask your dentist for anti-sensitivity toothpaste to use after treatment, which can help with this discomfort.

How does the Zoom! In-off ice system work?

The Zoom! light activated whitening gel's active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that using the Zoom! lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom! gel by 26% or more, giving an average improvement of up to eight shades.

What will I experience during the Zoom! In-Office Procedure?

Patients are able to watch television or listen to music during the procedure.  Patients with a strong gag reflex or anxiety may have difficulty throughout the process.

What causes tooth discoloration?

Tooth discoloration happens for various reasons.  The most common icauses are aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.
