Orthodontics – Making Straighter Smiles
Orthodontics is a mode of dentistry that revolves around the straightening of teeth. The term orthodontics most often brings to mind images of braces or unsightly headgear, but new technology is allowing orthodontic procedures to be more comfortable and much more aesthetically acceptible.
Instead of traditional metal braces and retainers, orthodontics now includes the treatment known as Invisalign. Invisalign is a nearly invisible teeth-straightening alternative to metal brackets and wires, which allows patients to improve their smile without impairing their physical appearance. This development in orthodontic technology is especially beneficial for adult patients who need braces but may be unwilling to go through with traditional fixed metal braces. It’s been a pleasure performing Invisalign treatments on patients because I’ve been able to experience their satisfaction first hand. Not only is Invisalign nearly Invisible it is removeable and thus for those very special occasions the retainers can be removed.
The main purpose of orthodontic procedures is to treat malocclusion, or problems with a person’s bite which may impair eating, speaking or both. The lack of alignment can affect the proper functioning of the teeth as well as making the teeth much more difficult to clean not to mention affecting the patient’s overall appearance. Orthodontic procedures often fall under both categories of restorative and cosmetic dentistry.
Your invisalign accredited dentist will evaluate your bite in order to develop a treatment plan. This evaluation will include an oral, facial and functional exam, intraoral and facial photographs and a large panoramic X-rays, and impressions for models of the teeth and bite. He will also review your dental records and perform a clinical assessment. Afterwards, he/she will discuss any necessary treatment options with you. These records are then sent off to Invisalign who produce an animation of your teeth moving for you to see how the treatment will progress.
Remember, it’s better to prevent problems before they start. Restoring confidence in my patients is extremely rewarding, and Invisalign has given me the opportunity to do so on a regular basis.
